Preface to this issue
There
are two things that Duke University is known for, its academic reputation and its world-class basketball team. The following compilation of student essays will bring these two aspects of Duke University together as
one and hopefully allow us to have some fun along the way. The essays that follow
take some of today’s most abstract scientific concepts and link them to Duke basketball. Missed free throws, the J.J.
Reddick three pointer, and the pride that comes with Duke basketball will be explained using concepts ranging from quantum
physics to genetics to the biology of zebrafish. Sure we are hoping to teach
you some science, but if we’re lucky you just might enjoy it.
